In recent days, the federal government released forecasts for the minimum wage for 2023. The change in the national minimum limit thus affects not only the remuneration of millions of employees, but also the benefits of the National Social Security Institute (INSS). .

The adjustment is provided for by law and aims to prevent inflation from reducing citizens' purchasing power. According to the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), around 34 million people in Brazil currently earn a minimum wage.

New minimum wage

The new value is only officially announced in January of each year. However, it is possible to see the governments' estimates in the budget guidelines bill submitted to Congress. Thus, in the last document, the estimated adjustment is 6.70, which would bring the value of the national floor to R$ 1,294.00.

Therefore, the increase would be R$ 82.00 compared to the current minimum wage which is R$ 1,212.00. The calculation is based on the Broad National Consumer Price Index (INPC) estimated for 2022, an index that measures inflation for families with incomes between one and five minimum wages.

INSS upper limit

With the adjustment of the minimum wage, the upper limit of the INSS and the lower limit of the benefit will be changed. If the percentage is confirmed, the maximum amount paid to Local Authority policyholders will increase from R$ 7,087.22 to R$ 7,612.38 in 2023.

Readjustment

The INPC forecasts included in the latest macrofiscal bulletin from the Secretariat of Economic Policy (PES) are above 6.70. However, the Department of Commerce now calculates that the country's inflation should end the year at 7.41.

Therefore, the minimum wage is readjusted again by this percentage.
