The iPhone's operating system, iOS 17, was presented at the Apple WWDC 2023 event on the 5th, Monday, arriving with new features focused on customization and application optimization. The announcement of the new features, however, was accompanied by some not very encouraging news for holders of older iPhone models: the update is limited to devices launched from the iPhone XS onwards, from 2018, this automatically leaves out the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and their predecessors.
Still without a date for the distribution of the system, the company only highlighted that users will be able to access the system from the second half of the year, probably close to the launch of the iPhone 15. So far, only the beta version for developers is available . Starting next month, all other users will be able to access the trial version.
The exclusion of the iPhone 8 from the list of models to receive the newly released new software is an expected action that periodically limits support for the brand's older devices. Even though it was deprived of a major update, the device launched in 2017 has received 5 system updates so far. Remembering that the same thing happened in 2022 with the iPhone 7 during the presentation of the iOS 16 system.
System compatibility for the 2017 model divided questions among analysts. On one side, there were those who believed that the device that runs iOS 16 is capable of handling iOS 17. On the other, there were those who warned of a possible vulnerability in the phone's Bootron that could reinforce an abandonment by Apple.
With the official information already released, it is certain that only devices announced from 2018 onwards should receive the system presented at WWDC. With this, iOS 17 will reach the following iPhone models:
- iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max;
- iPhone XR;
- iPhone SE 2022.
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max;
- iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max;
- iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max;
- iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.
What's new in Apple's iOS 17?
Among the new features announced by Apple's software is the personalization of contacts with photos, memoji and special typography that is displayed prominently during a call. There is also the transcription of audio recorded in voicemail that appears on the call screen, in addition to the possibility of recording audio and video messages on FaceTime.
The devices will also be able to enjoy a stand-by screen similar to a table clock, in addition to enabling complete records with photos, location and other information through the Journal tool. So far, there has been no news regarding the significant AI implementations that were expected for iOS 17, especially for Siri.
