Last Wednesday, the 11th, after a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) at Palácio do Planalto, Wellington Dias, Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, stated that around 10 of millions of families will have to go through a fine-tooth comb process of the Bolsa Família program.

The objective of the measure is to investigate signs of irregularities. Because many beneficiaries may receive the amounts unnecessarily.

The update will be based on data from the Single Registry (CadÚnico). “This re-registration will certainly give us security for anyone who has irregularly left the list of beneficiaries.“, said the minister.

Currently, there are 40.7 million families registered in the program. According to Dias, around 6 million registrations are undergoing priority analysis, with a large proportion coming from single-person families (made up of just one person). Many of these beneficiaries would have entered mainly in the second quarter of 2022, when there was an expansion of the program by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) shortly before the presidential elections.

For the new government, the update will be done so that benefit payments are safer and more agile, and can reach families who really need it.

The minister highlighted that the objective of the new government is to remove Brazil from the Hunger and Food Insecurity Map during Lula's mandate.

Additional installment of R$ 150 only in March

The government also confirmed that from March onwards, the additional installment of R$ 150 per child under 6 years old who is part of Bolsa Família will be paid, in addition to the R$ 600 approved by the National Congress in December 2022 through the Provisional Measure 1155/2023.

Now in January we will pay R$ 600.00. In February, both the registration update and all this work with the social security network will begin, with an active search to include those outside [Bolsa Família]“, he stressed.

The Ministry of Social Development intends to carry out an active search to identify and enroll in the Bolsa Família program individuals eligible for the monthly benefit, but who are not yet receiving financial assistance. Dias explained that he will work with municipalities to identify families that really need the assistance.
