The Bolsa Família program returned in January 2023 together with the elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The transition team had already confirmed the replacement of the Auxílio Brasil program that began in October 2021 under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

In August 2022, before the first round of presidential elections, the minimum payment value of the former Auxílio Brasil increased from R$ 400 to R$ 600, including more than 2.2 million new families, representing a total of 20.2 million beneficiaries in situations of social vulnerability.

However, in addition to Bolsa Família, the Lula government will pay an additional installment of R$ 150 per family with children under six years of age.

Brazil Aid x Bolsa Família

In addition to changing the name of the benefit, there must also be other changes. Beneficiary families can thus receive extra when conditions return from January.

Due to PEC 32/2022, which increased the value of Brazil Aid to R$ 600, the expectation was that the increase would last until December 2022. If Bolsonaro was re-elected, the benefit would return to R$ 405, as he sent in the Budget. Lula, on the other hand, promised during his electoral campaign that he would keep the additional amount if he was re-elected.

As Lula won the elections, the amount was guaranteed for 2023, outside the government's spending cap, in addition to the additional R$ 150 for children up to six years old.

Bolsa Família of R$ 900?

As the additional installments of R$ 150 are intended for families with young children up to six years old, families who have, for example, two children in this age group will be entitled to an additional R$ 300. Thus, the Bolsa Família benefit quota it can reach the value of R$ 900, with the sum of the benefit value + the additional amount per child.

How to receive the additional benefit amount?

First, the family must be duly registered in the Government database (CadÚnico) to determine who will be entitled to the amounts. Anyone registered in the system will have access to the aid payroll, which must always be updated.

It is estimated that in the new government, the conditions for families to continue receiving the amount will normally return.

In the first version of the Bolsa Família program, conditions were created, but were no longer required with the transition to Auxílio Brasil. Are they:

  • School attendance of children from beneficiary families up to 85%;
  • Monitoring of lactating women;
  • In the case of pregnant women who form part of the family, prenatal care is necessary;
  • For children who are in child labor situations, socio-educational campaigns are carried out;
  • Children's vaccination records must be up to date.
