A camera without lenses, which generates images from location data and AI, was presented earlier this week by Bjørn Karmann, a Dutch artist. Named Paragraphica, it is the first non-optical camera in history.

This is because, instead of using light to sensitize a frame of film or a digital sensor, the curious device feeds only on location data and Artificial Intelligence. On the camera body, the viewfinder does not display images, but rather real-time description details of the current position. When activated, the camera shutter creates a scintigraphic representation of the description.

Finally, 3 physical displays allow control of data and Artificial Intelligence parameters to calibrate and “focus” the photo as happens with traditional cameras. In fact, this type of operation would even eliminate the need for bizarre hardware, but the retro-style design, in addition to being fun, is reminiscent of an episode of Star Trek.

A camera WITHOUT lenses and with AI? How does it work?

Functionally, the camera completely developed by Bjørn Karmann is a Raspberry Pi 4, that is, an accessory that is specially designed to be used together with the well-known single-board computer, popular among programming and technology students. In his project, Karmann inserted a Pi module inside a 3D printed case along with the other electronic components.

On the outside, a screen display was installed that works as a touchscreen that receives input commands. Localization employs a common GPS module. Karmann was responsible for writing all of Paragraphica's software, and it consists of a combination of Python and a Stable Diffusion interface. Noodl, a visual tool, is part of the set.
