Last Thursday, the 12th, the president of Caixa Econômica Federal, Rita Serrano, informed that the bank had urgently suspended the granting of new loans granted until the month of February for Bolsa Família beneficiaries.
The measure was created during the government of Jair Bolsonaro and released around R$ 2,500 in resources for beneficiaries of the then Auxílio Brasil program, with payment through the discount of installments of the benefit paid by the government to the 21 million beneficiaries.
“I can now announce to you that we are suspending the “Auxílio Brasil” consignment, for two reasons. The first is because the Ministry of Social Development will review the register, so, as the Ministry will carry out the review, it is not a good idea for us to keep it, because we do not know who will remain on the register or not“, he stated.
Another reason pointed out by the new president of Caixa would be the interest charged “The interest rates for this type of loan are very high, so we are also suspending it to reevaluate this interest issue and analyze the possibilities that exist to lower these interest rates.“, he added.
Announcement of the suspension of the Auxílio Brasil/Bolsa Família consignment
The announcement was made to the press after Rita Serrano's inauguration ceremony as the bank's new president.
Regarding forgetting about the debts that the beneficiaries still have outstanding with the loan, Serrano said: “Look, we don't work with this perspective, because, forgiveness from debtors, there is no way the bank can do“. However, the president of Caixa said that there may be the possibility of negotiating “formats to lower interest rates” with the government.
In a note, Caixa highlighted that the contracting of the Auxílio Brasil loan will remain suspended and that the credit line will undergo a complete review of the parameters and criteria.
“For those who have already hired, nothing changes. Installments will be debited regularly and according to each registration“, said Caixa.
Creation of the Auxílio Brasil loan
Created in 2022, the Auxílio Brasil loan began in the middle of the electoral campaign for president of the Republic. Caixa is the main bank that offers this type of credit.
Even so, experts criticized the modality, pointing to the risk of debt for the most vulnerable population.
The Auxílio Brasil payroll loan discount is carried out directly at the source, thus using the means of support for low-income families, until the amounts are paid off.
