Tuesday, January 31st, was the deadline for employees born in January to request the FGTS birthday withdrawal. The group is one of the few that will still have the chance to request a change of modality in 2023, after the announcement of the end of the anniversary withdrawal.
Currently, workers can request a birthday withdrawal at any time. However, if you want to withdraw the amounts within the current year, the request must be made from the first business day to the last business day of the anniversary month.
When opting for the FGTS birthday withdrawal method, the employee receives a portion of the Guarantee Fund balance every year, but gives up the full withdrawal from the Fund if he or she is fired.
This is even one of the reasons used by Luiz Marinho, the new Minister of Labor, to defend the end of the birthday withdrawal modality. “We must put an end to this birthday withdrawal format. For existing contracts, we will not distort”, he said in an interview with GloboNews.
Birthday withdrawal may come to an end in March
According to the minister, a meeting is scheduled for March 21 to discuss the end of the FGTS anniversary withdrawal together with the Fund and Guarantee Board of Trustees. The council is made up of representatives from the government, employers and entities that represent workers.
Until then, positive news is that the FGTS birthday withdrawal is still available to those born in February and March, guaranteeing withdrawal in 2023. In January, the birthday withdrawal reached a record number of requests after the announcement end of the modality.
According to Caixa, 1.11 billion were redeemed from the Guarantee Fund, a record amount reached in January since the modality was introduced in 2019.
The deadline for workers born in November to withdraw their birthday withdrawal also ended on Tuesday, January 31st. As the money is available in the account for a period of 3 months, whoever requested it should move the amounts by the last business day of January 2023.
For workers born in December and who requested a birthday withdrawal in 2022, they will have until February 28, 2023 to withdraw the funds. See the anniversary withdrawal calendar for 2023 below:
- Born in January – withdrawal available from January 2nd to March 31st
- Born in February – withdrawal available from February 1st to April 28th
- Born in March – withdrawal available from March 1st to May 31st

- Born in September – withdrawal available from September 1st to November 30th

How does the FGTS birthday withdrawal work?
To access part of the Guarantee Fund balance every year, the worker must opt for a birthday withdrawal at a Caixa branch or through the FGTS App. Receiving the amounts is optional, as the standard method of withdrawing from the Fund is withdrawal-termination, available when the employee is dismissed without just cause.
When logging in with CPF and password in the FGTS application, select the option “My Withdrawals” and immediately after “Birthday Withdrawal Modality“. On the next screen, the employee will be able to check information about the changes that will occur when opting for the birthday withdrawal method and can also simulate the value of the withdrawal released taking into account the total balance of the account on the current date.
Then, simply check the box “I have read and accept the Terms and Conditions” and click on Opt for Birthday Withdrawal.
When opting for the FGTS birthday withdrawal, the employee continues to have the right to withdraw the FGTS in the modalities provided for by law, such as retirement, acquisition of their own home, among others. However, you will not be able to withdraw the full amount from the Guarantee Fund in the event of dismissal and will only have access to withdrawing the termination fine, when due.
Another important point for the employee to consider is that if they wish to request a return to the withdrawal withdrawal, the change will only be effective from the 25th month after the date of the return request, that is, the employee will continue receiving the anniversary withdrawal for a period of 2 years before returning to the termination mode.
For example, an employee born in February who requests a change from the birthday withdrawal to the termination withdrawal on 05/05/2022 will only have the change effective from June 1, 2024 (1st business day of the 25th month after ordering). Thus, during this period the employee will receive:
- In February 2023 you will be entitled to the annual birthday withdrawal;
- In February 2024 you will be entitled to the annual birthday withdrawal;
- From June 1, 2024, the withdrawal-termination will come into force.
What is the value of the birthday withdrawal in 2023?
The amount to be received in this modality will depend on the balance available in each worker's account. Therefore, to find out the exact amount that can be withdrawn, simply access the FGTS application or perform the calculation based on the range of balance available in the account (withdrawal rate) plus an additional installment. To perform the calculation, simply follow the table:
Balance Ranges – R$ | Withdrawal rate | Additional Installment |
Up to R$ 500 | 50% | R$ 0.00 |
From 500.01 to 1,000 | 40% | R$ 50.00 |
From 1,000.01 to 5,000 | 30% | R$ 150.00 |
From 5,000.01 to 10,000 | 20% | R$ 650.00 |
From 10,000.01 to 15,000 | 15% | R$ 1,150.00 |
From 15,000.01 to 20,000 | 10% | R$ 1,900.00 |
Above 20,000.01 | 5% | R$ 2,900.00 |
For example: A worker who has R$ 1 thousand of available balance in the FGTS will be able to receive R$ 400.00 (rate of 40%), plus an installment of R$ 50.00, totaling the birthday withdrawal of R$ 450.00.
