More than 32 million workers benefited from rounds of the FGTS extraordinary withdrawal in 2020 and 2022.
The emergency withdrawal of resources from active and inactive accounts was authorized as an economic measure so that the population could face the crisis caused during the pandemic period.
It is important to remember that the installment advance will not reach all 21.25 million beneficiaries who receive it in the month of May.
After the Government gave authorization, Caixa Econômica released the withdrawal of up to R$ 1 thousand per worker, following the calendar established by the bank. The Extraordinary Withdrawal moves resources from extinct and inactive FGTS accounts and then from active accounts under current employment contracts.
Will the FGTS Extraordinary Withdrawal return in 2023?
As an alternative to FGTS withdrawals guaranteed only in exceptional cases, the Extraordinary Withdrawal was still awaited by many Brazilians this year. However, the news is not very encouraging: The Federal Government, through the MDS (Ministry of Labor), informed that there is no forecast for a new round of emergency withdrawals in 2023.
Generally announced at the beginning of the year, the release of the extraordinary withdrawal was still defined, but the Government has already given the last word on the measure. According to the statement, for the release of a new round, a new public calamity decree would be necessary, which is not among the Federal Government's plans.
“The release of the FGTS, according to the Board of Trustees’ rules, is dependent only on the Government’s decree of a state of calamity for Caixa to make payments. It’s automatic, it doesn’t need to be released”, said the Ministry of Labor in a note.
It was also added by the department that related to other FGTS withdrawal methods, any changes must go through the Board of Trustees, which has a meeting scheduled for May.
Extraordinary Withdrawal Calendar in 2022
The 1st round of the FGTS emergency withdrawal took place in 2020 and benefited a total of 31.7 million workers who were able to withdraw up to R$ 1,045 (minimum wage value at the time). In 2022, the extraordinary FGTS reached a higher number, 32.7 million, and withdrawals in the amount of R$ 1 thousand per person were authorized.

Will the Birthday Loot end?
Another controversial method of withdrawing the FGTS is the birthday withdrawal. Instituted during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro, the FGTS withdrawal format came into the sights of Luiz Marinho, Minister of Labor, in the first months of the new term of the Lula government.
After receiving negative repercussions, Marinho went back and informed that any decision regarding the end of the anniversary withdrawal would be discussed with the FGTS Board of Trustees, made up of representatives of the Government, workers and employees.
To date, the withdrawal modality remains active and new withdrawals can be requested. The birthday withdrawal for those born in the month of May was made available from the 2nd, Tuesday. The council is expected to meet this month and news regarding the possible end of the FGTS anniversary withdrawal may be released in the following weeks.
