Government publishes in the Official Gazette the times off to watch Brazil in the World Cup

Guidelines for bodies and entities of the federal public administration on working hours on game days for the Brazilian team at the 2022 World Cup were published this Friday, November 11, in the Official Gazette of the Union.

This Friday, November 11th, in the Official Gazette of the Union, by Order 9,763 of the Ministry of Economy, the guidelines for bodies and entities of the federal, self-sufficient and foundational public administration on office hours on national team match days were published. The rules apply to public servants, public employees, temporary contractors and interns and are in force from this Friday, 11th. 

Now, servers will be able, exceptionally, to watch the Brazilian team's matches, but they will have to make up for lost hours. The regulation defined the following:

  • On days when games are played at 12 noon, there will be no opening hours;
  • On days when the games are held at 1 pm, business hours will end at 11 am (Brasília time);
  • On days when the games are held at 4 pm, business hours will end at 2 pm (Brasília time).

Hours not worked due to the Brazilian games must be compensated between December 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023 as follows:

  • For public employees who perform their duties in person and do not participate in the Management Program, this remuneration must be made before the start of the daily work day or its postponement, respecting the working hours of the body or entity;  
  • For employees participating in the Management Program, in the form of in-person or remote work, in full or partial execution, this compensation must be made upon fulfillment of all deliveries agreed in the work plan in accordance with the hours to be remunerated .

Those who do not compensate the hours will receive a discount on their remuneration proportional to the hours not compensated. Time compensation is limited to 2 hours per day of the working day. The ordinance was signed by Paulo Guedes, Minister of Economy.

Furthermore, government bodies and corporations must remain operational during game times, to enable public officials to carry out their activities during regular business hours. 

It will be up to the directors of bodies and entities to ensure the full preservation and functioning of services that are considered essential.

Brazil's World Cup games

During the first phase of the World Cup in Qatar, the Brazilian team's games will be played on the following dates: 

  • Thursday, November 24th, at 4pm (Brasília time), against Serbia, in Doha; 
  • Monday, November 28th, at 1pm, against Switzerland; 
  • Friday, December 2nd, at 4pm, against Cameroon. 

If they are first placed in Group G, Brazil will face the second placed team in Group H formed by Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea on December 5th, Monday, at 4pm.
