Minister Rosa Weber was elected the new president of the STF, this Wednesday (10). The opening is scheduled for September 12th.

Also in this Wednesday session, minister Luís Roberto Barroso was elected the new vice-president of the STF.

Both were elected by 10 votes to 1. The election takes place among the court's own ministers and is subject to protocol. The STF adopts a rotation system for the succession of its presidents based on seniority criteria.

Thus, the oldest minister who has not previously presided over the STF is elected.

Rosa Weber replaces Luiz Fux as president of the STF

Rosa Weber will replace judge Luiz Fux at the helm of the court, but, unlike previous presidents, she will not serve a two-year term, as she will retire at the beginning of October 2023, when she turns 75.

This tradition does not obfuscate, does not inhibit, does not harm the fact that I am moved by Your Excellencies' vote of confidence. Leading the judiciary is an unparalleled honor for a professional judge like me, who has been doing it for 46 years, she said.

Especially in these turbulent times in which we live, carrying out this job is an immense challenge, explained Weber.

I will try to carry it out with complete serenity and with the certainty of Your Excellencies' support, which for me will be fundamental. And always in defense of the integrity and sovereignty of the constitution and democracy.
