Microsoft will end support for the virtual assistant Cortana on Windows 10 and Windows 11 by the end of 2023. The company is expected to replace Cortana with Windows Copilot, a new Artificial Intelligence assistant for more complex tasks with ChatGPT technologies.

A note regarding the deactivation confirmed that the end of support only impacts Cortana on Windows and the productivity assistant. The feature will continue to be available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, and Teams desktop dashboards and rooms.

Microsoft says the end of Cortana could impact some ways people work on Windows. However, the company is committed to making a “smoother transition to the new options”.

As suggestions for new tools, the company recommends Bing Chat in the Bing browser. With the same technology as ChatGPT, the chatbot can perform detailed searches with sources, prepare texts and even create images with Artificial Intelligence.

The second option suggested by Microsoft is Windows Copilot. The Windows “copilot” will be officially launched in the last quarter of 2023, a period in which Cortana is expected to be deactivated.

Windows Copilot Assistant

Based on the Open AI system, ChatGPT, Windows Copilot promises to add Artificial Intelligence capabilities to popular Microsoft 365 productivity applications. Furthermore, Windows 11 will be the first operating system to feature centralized AI assistance.

According to the examples given by the company, the tool will assist in developing texts in Word, creating presentations in PowerPoint and organizing data spreadsheets in Excel. As well, it can be used as a personal assistant for various searches.

According to Microsoft, the new assistant will be available through a central button on the taskbar. When the user accesses the assistant, it will remain active in a bar on the side of the screen.
