Netflix has announced changes that could soon make the streaming service more expensive in the country. The controversial fee for sharing accounts is expected to arrive in Brazil in the coming months, making the monthly fee more expensive for some subscribers.

The news was revealed during the disclosure of the company's financial statement to shareholders on April 18th. With results well below expectations, mainly due to the weak growth of new users in Latin America, the streaming company revealed that it intends to anticipate the new charging method as a way to reverse the numbers and increase its revenue.

According to Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix, the change in rules that will allow charging for account sharing will take place more broadly starting this quarter, starting in April. This means it is only a matter of time before, by mid-June, the additional fee will be in effect.

The executive did not want to give further details regarding the values or in which countries this unexciting new development should be applied. However, he is objective in saying that it will be something implemented in most places where the company operates. Greg only mentions the United States, but it is expected that Brazil will be included in the list, as it is one of the largest markets for the company.

So far, Netflix Brazil has not commented on the matter. According to the company, so far, there is no information beyond what was disclosed in the last financial results.

Furthermore, Greg Peters mentioned that some countries may not have this additional charge and that this decision will be made on a case-by-case basis by the streaming company based on the reality of each market. Still, he emphasizes that the new policy should really be the rule and not the exception. “When you think from a revenue perspective, the vast majority of launches will happen in the second quarter”, he states.

How much will sharing passwords on Netflix cost?

As there is no concrete information regarding the arrival of the charge in Brazil, there is nothing confirmed regarding the value of this fee. In the presentation to shareholders, Greg pointed out that the price will depend on the reality of each country and that there is still no specific rule for this.

According to the co-CEO, several prices were tested pre-launch in Latin America and this gives an idea of the ideal price to be charged. However, he does not provide further details on the conclusions obtained in the first survey.

In countries where charging has currently been implemented, such as Argentina, Chile and Peru, the fee charged for account sharing had a wide variation. The cheapest price was in Argentina, where users paid a total of 219 pesos (about R$ 5) to share their password with friends. In Peru, the value reached the equivalent of R$ 11, in Chile the value was R$ 15. In Portugal, the extra charge is 3.99 euros (R$ 22).
